The verb to be (Động từ to be ở thể hiện tại)

A/ Form (Hình thái)

Affirmative (khẳng định)
  • I am
  • He/ She/ It is
  • We/ You/ They are


Negative (phủ định)
  • I am not/ I’m not
  • He/ She/ It is not (isn’t) OR He’s not/ She’s not/ It’s not
  • We/ You/ They are not (aren’t) OR We’re not/ Youre not/ They’re not


Question (câu hỏi)
  • Am I tall?
  • Is he/ she/ it tall?
  • Are we/ you/ they tall?


B/ Short answers (Trả lời ngắn ngọn, cho câu hỏi có TO BE đứng đầu)

Example: Am I tall?
                 Are we/ you/ they tall?
                 Is he/ she/ it tall?
  • Yes, I am.
  • Yes, we/ you/ they are
  • Yes, he/ she/ it is

  • No, I’m not
  • No, we/ you/ they aren’t OR No, we’re not/ you’re not/ they’re not
  • No, he/ she/ it isn’t OR No, he’s not/ she’s not/ it’s not


Short forms (dạng viết rút gọn)
  • I am = I’m
  • You are = you’re
  • We are = We’re
  • They are = They’re
  • He is = He’s
  • She is = She’s
  • It is = It’s


Examples:
  • I’m tall. (I am tall)
  • She’s short. (She is short)
  • John’s handsome. (John is handsome)
  • London’s a big city. (London is a big city)


C/ Use (Cách dùng)
Động từ to be thường được dùng để miêu tả:

Ages (tuổi)
  • I’m 21 and my brother is 9.
  • Is he 16?

Occupations (Nghề nghiệp)
  • He’s a doctor and his parents are teachers.
  • Are you a student? - No, I’m not.

Prices (Giá cả)
  • How much is this?
  • This house is US$ 300,000

The time (nói giờ giấc)
  • It’s 3 o’clock.
  • Is it 10 o’clock? No, it isn’t. It’s 9 o’clock.

Feelings and states (Cảm xúc và trạng thái)
  • I’m hungry.
  • Are you tired? No, I’m not.

Nationality (Quốc tịch)
  • She’s Japanese.
  • Are they French? No, they aren’t. They are American.

Colours (Màu sắc)
  • His hair is blonde.
  • Are her eyes blue? No, they’re green.
