Vocab lesson 3



Give the impression of being + [adjective]
-> He gives the impression of being very serious, but actually he’s got a great sense of humor and can be really funny.

(B1) Warm /wɔːm/= friendly and showing affection
-> People often think she is a bit unfriendly at first, but when you get to know her, she is really warm

Other adjective describing people
Supportive, calm, funny, hardworking, noisy, selfish, shy, warm, sociable, serious, stressed, caring, considerate, lazy, competitive, quiet, unfriendly
                                                                                                 
(B1) Rather /ˈrɑːðər/ (adv) : slightly [slightly or to a degree]
-> She was rather competitive in class, but always supportive if you asked her for help.
-> I rather like it
-> I found that book rather dull
(B1) At first: at the beginning of a situation or period of time

-> People often think she is a bit unfriendly at first, but when you get to know her, she is really warm

(A2) A bit = a little = slightly
-> It’s a bit cold in here.
-> that bag is a bit expensive.

A great deal = a lot
Q: Do you think the way people eat now is different from they way they ate in your grandparents’ day?
A: Yes, I think it’s changed a great deal. = it’s changed a lot
-> A great deal of time and effort went into arranging this party.
-> I paid a great deal less than it was worth.

Owing to = due to = because of
-> It is undeniable that the average person’s lifestyle has changed enormously during the last few decades owing to the huge impact of modern technology and economic development.

Much (with adjectives) = a lot
used before comparative adjectives (= adjectives like 'better' and 'smaller', that are used to compare things) to mean 'a lot'
-> Some people believe that modern life is much better than in the past.
-> Their old house was much bigger.
-> That's a much more sensible idea.

(B2) Furthermore (adv): in addition to what has just been said
-> As evidence of this, they point to improvements of healthcare and education and the general increase in the standard of living. Furthermore, they argue that machines have changed working conditions and reduced the need for hard physical labour, and they talk about the large leisure industries that have transformed people’s free time.
